An Overview of Suggested Veterinary Care for Your New Puppy

Just as with new babies, a new puppy needs to be protected from viruses and bacteria that can harm their health now and in the years to come. Below we have outlined some of the vaccines that your new pet needs in order to have a long and healthy life.

Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is highly contagious. It is passed rapidly through coughed or sneezed droplets of saliva. Young puppies, between the ages of 3-6 months are most susceptible and are most likely to die from it. Non-immunized adult dogs are also highly susceptible.

Parvo Virus

Parvovirus is a common and severe gastrointestinal disease of dogs, spread by fecal contact. The virus causes lethargy, vomiting, bloody diarrhea and sometimes death. Vaccinating is most important.

Leptosporosis

Lepto is a disease that infects both animals and humans, and is prevalent in Northwest Ohio. It is transmitted through infected urine from squirrels, raccoons, deer and other assorted wildlife that is abundant in our area. Lepto infection in unprotected pets commonly leads to end stage kidney and/or liver failure and death.

Bordetella

Bordetella is commonly referred to as “kennel cough” or bronchitis. Do you and your dog ever go on walks, cross paths with another dog, require boarding or go to the groomer? If you answered yes to any of these, then your new puppy has probably been exposed to bordetella and vaccination is recommended.

Rabies

Rabies is a virus common in wild animals. All dogs should be vaccinated for this virus.
